Visas

It's vital that you have fully checked out the visa requirements of any countries you intend to visit prior to setting off on your backpacking trip or gap year. A lack of preparation could completely ruin your trip abroad.

Work out the route you are going to take as you don't want your visas to run out before you arrive! In some cases, this might mean applying for your visas on the road.

Always check the requirements with the respective embassy or consulate of the country you wish to visit - and make sure you know their opening hours. Some embassies are only open for visa applications on certain days — and most are shut for their own public holidays as well as those of the country they're in.

As a rule, you are free to live and work in any EU full member country, but for all other countries there will be differing rules and regulations for visitors.

Here's a rough guide to some of the more popular locations.

Australia

To visit Australia you will require a visa which can be granted for between 3 and 12 months. The different types of visa and how to apply for one are explained on this Australian Government website http://www.immi.gov.au/http://www.backpacker-travels.com

Please note that if you intend to work while you're in Australia you must have a special working visa.

North America

The US and Canada both operate a complicated procedure for working visas which you should check out thoroughly prior to your trip. However, All UK citizens can visit the US or Canada for 3 months for a holiday using their normal passport.

When visiting the US, you should make sure all your identification and other personal documents are up-to-date; and be prepared for delays caused by extensive security checks.

India

All visitors to India, including children, require visas. These can normally be issued for a period of up to 6 months and are available on a multiple entry basis. 6 month tourist visas are extendable in certain circumstances.

New Zealand
