New Zealand Backpacker Guide

new zealand travel guide

New Zealand is a country of rare natural beauty. Experience the glacial mountains, fast flowing rivers and desolate lakes to geysers, mud pools and beautiful beaches.

It is particularly popular as a holiday destination for those interested in outdoor pursuits as it offers a great range of activities. Skiing is popular in our summer months with other activities including rafting, hiking, fishing or even swimming with dolphins.

More adventurous hikers or mountaineers might wish to visit the Mount Cook National Park where the terrain varies from rainforest to glacial passes and snowfields at the highest peaks.

New Zealand is split into two islands, north and south. It is remarkably compact and travel is easy and affordable. Accommodation out of peak times is also good value and freely available. The largest city is Auckland and it is spectacularly surrounded by water and covered in volcanic hills.

The climate is good with the busiest periods being between November and April. Ski resorts are obviously busier during the New Zealand winter.
