Like Australia, India is a huge country offering rich rewards for the determined traveller keen to experience a diverse lifestyle, culture and cuisine.
There are certain health risks and issues that you may wish to check out thoroughly before embarking as well as certain areas that it is advisable to avoid.
October to March is the best period to visit India in general, but there is such a variation in climate in certain areas that this should be nothing more than a rough guide with no overall degree of certainty. Monsoons occur in different parts of the country at different times, with the drier areas at their best during these periods.
Of course, many British holidaymakers and backpackers head for the more exotic region of Goa in the west of India. Famed for its beach parties and hedonistic lifestyle of the 60s, it is still a popular haunt for many travellers with its relaxed atmosphere and excellent climate.
Adventurous backpackers may wish to head for the Indian Himalayas. The trekking season here is from April to November though this does vary by region. And the skiing season is from January to March.
There are many wonderful festivals that you might wish to consider seeing. Festivals are a major part of Indian life. These are spectacular and worth experiencing if at all possible. Major festivals include the Republic Day Festival in Delhi (January), Holi in the north of India (February), Rath Yatra in Puri (June/July) and Diwali (November).
