Far East Backpacker Guide

far east travel guide

The Far East is another huge area that encompasses a number of popular travel and backpacking destinations. Popular countries for backpackers include Japan, Thailand, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and South Korea but there are many more.

Each offers a vastly different backpacking and cultural experience from the high tech complexity of modern Tokyo to probably the most exciting country in the world, China. Once out of bounds for most western travellers, China is now a hugely exciting place to visit and with the Olympics set for Beijing in 2008, its attraction will grow still further.

Hong Kong also remains hugely popular, with its British connections still strongly evident. It is a good base from which to explore the Far East further.

Backpackers often head for Thailand where golden beaches and package holidays can be set against breathtaking scenery and an exotic history.

Many parts of the region were massively affected by the Tsunami on Boxing Day 2004. However, tourism was and remains a very important part of this region and you should not be deterred from visiting. Much of the tourist infrastructure has been rebuilt as a priority.

The Foreign Office provides advice to anyone wishing to visit the area - http://www.fco.gov.uk
