04 August 2006 Young travellers going unprepared
Surprising numbers of young travellers are under-prepared and are putting themselves at risk, according to a new survey, with just a quarter of backpackers admitting to researching their destination before they depart.
The report form travel specialist i-to-i has revealed that nearly two thirds of backpackers and those looking to take out gap year travel insurance fail to increase their levels of caution in new and exotic locations.
Young male travellers are the worst offenders, with one in four confessing to taking more risks while in foreign countries, while around half of the 16 to 30-year olds questioned had not bothered to arrange adequate travel insurance for their trips.
Deirdre Bounds, founder of i-to-i commented: "Travel insurance is absolutely paramount when planning your trip aboard which makes it even more shocking that more and more youngsters are cutting it out in a bid to save cash.
"Young travellers need to bear in mind that they are visiting places which are often completely different to home and where they will stick out like a sore thumb."
Robbery, drunken or drug-induced accidents, as well as injuries from adventurous activities and lost items could all cost young travellers a lot of expense.
