11 March 2006 Young lacking in travel insurance awareness
Although the younger generation may be among some of the most adventurous when it comes to globetrotting, it would seem that they are also the most unaware of the pitfalls of travelling without insurance.
Research conducted by Sainsbury's Bank (SB) found that out of the total of 3.3 million Brits who travelled abroad last year, one fifth were aged between 16 and 24-years-old.
Emphasising the need for backpacker insurance, this amounts to over one million young people travelling without cover last year.
"The largest number of travellers going on holiday without insurance seem to be the under 24s so we are urging them in particular not to forget travel insurance and to make sure it's on their holiday 'to-do' list along with sun lotion," said Karen Preston, SB's travel insurance manager.
"By shopping around, you can find quality cover at a competitive price," she added.
Further research by Saga Travel Money found that the 16 to 24 age group bracket was also least likely to shop around for zero per cent commission on their foreign exchange.
This, coupled with the need for more young people to be aware of the potential financial pitfalls of travelling without insurance, demonstrates that the younger generation may need to take a more financially-savvy attitude to their holiday finances.
