26 April 2006 Visitor's centre compliments cradle of humanity
Those with backpacker travel insurance could pay a visit to the new visitor's centre in Sterkfontein Cave a South African archaeological site that has been termed the Cradle of Humankind.
Speaking on Tuesday this week, Paul Mashatile, the minister for finance and economic affairs, said that various developments at Sterkfontein reinforced the fact that the area had a growing "niche focus" as a tourist destination, reports the safrica.info website.
Located just outside Johannesburg, the Sterkfontein Cave has recently been nominated as a world heritage site and those who with gap year travel insurance who decide to visit the site could experience the fossil remains that are more than two million years old.
The Sterkfontein Cave is also the home to the earliest recorded evidence of humans making fire.
Engineering News reports that last month, Rob King, the chief executive of Furneaux Steward Gapp, the consortium behind the new visitor's centre, said that it "plans to make the Sterkfontein an iconic venue" and hopes to make the cave more attractive to visitors, which includes those with backpacker travel insurance.
