21 September 2006  Thailand 'still safe' as travel destination
Gap year students thinking of picking up backpacker travel insurance and heading to Thailand - and those already there - have been reassured that the country is still a safe destination, despite the recent coup d'etat in that country.

Keith Betton, head of corporate affairs for the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), told BBC One's Breakfast programme that those looking to travel had no cause to change their plans to visit the country.

Mr Betton said: "People who are travelling, you can still travel. I don't think there is any reason to avoid going to Thailand and certainly the Foreign Office advice has reflected that."

Tourists or those with gap year travel insurance staying in Thailand for the next few months will see "very little" of the impact of the change, according to eTN TravelNewsWire.

Military forces overthrew the government of Thailand, ousting prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, in a non-violent coup this week amidst allegations of corruption.
