07 October 2006 South Africa promoted as travel destination
Holidaymakers heading abroad, some who will be travelling with backpacker travel insurance, are being encouraged to visit South Africa, as the country hosts the UK's largest travel awards for consumers
The 20th Guardian, Observer and Guardian Unlimited Travel Awards are currently being held in Cape Town, South Africa.
UK tourism representatives in the country are due to visit the Robben Island, the Table Mountain landmark in Cape Town and the shopping centres on the V&A Waterfront.
David Frandsen, marketing executive manager of Cape Town Routes Unlimited, commented on his hopes for the consequences of the visits of the representatives to the country.
Mr Frandsen said: "We want to encourage them to fully experience the charm of our city and region and to leave as inspired and enthusiastic ambassadors for Cape Town, the Western Cape and South Africa.
Also this week, it was announced that a group of celebrities, including Samuel L. Jackson, Alfre Woodard and LaTanya Richardson Jackson, are travelling to the country to explore its historical sites and scenery as part of the Artists for a New South Africa programme.
Backpacking South Africa promotes the country as a "premier destination" for backpackers, who will need backpacker travel insurance to provide adequate cover for their extended trips, from all over the world.
