15 December 2006  Skint student travellers help the aged
Students, including those with gap year travel insurance, may be inspired to travel the world in order to raise money for the elderly, following a recent jaunt by Loughborough University students.

Mark Grout, Murray MacPherson and Aidan Wigham travelled from the Midlands to Calgary in Canada and back in one weekend in November to raise funds for Help the Aged - without spending any money at all.

The group used their ingenuity and news of their charity mission to talk their way into a free trip to Manchester airport and on a flight to Canada, though they could not talk their way into free hotel accommodation once they arrived.

Sarah Greene, community events organiser at the company, said: "We would like to say thank you to our student volunteers who were absolutely amazing."

She added that the organisation was "extremely grateful" for the money raised in sponsorship and further funds picked up during the trip.

Earlier this year, backpacker travel insurance provider American Express urged young people and their parents to guarantee they are adequately covered when they head abroad.

The company said that travellers should check their gap year travel insurance to make sure the terms and conditions are appropriate.
