17 March 2006 Ryanair introduces baggage surcharge
Budget airline Ryanair has announced that it is to begin charging passengers to check their baggage in before flights.
The airline, beloved of backpackers and people looking to take less costly city breaks, will charge people up to £5 for every item that goes into the hold.
It is hoped that the move will reduce queues and airport handling costs.
The cost is the sixth extra fee that supplements Ryanair's basic charges.
Levies for wheelchair users, passenger service charges and UK air duty have all driven up the costs in the past few years.
"We have to be more creative as to how we tackle costs," Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary said in January.
A growth in budget airlines and cheaper backpacker travel insurance have contributed to the growing number of people travelling around the world at lower prices, but as prices in air travel increase a greater emphasis will be placed on travellers to shop around for the best deals in gap year travel insurance.
