11 October 2006 Pre-Incan mummy on show in Peru
Holidaymakers heading abroad with backpacker travel insurance wanting a sight of something unique on their trip may want to consider a trip to Peru, where the Senora de Cao mummy is being exhibited for tourists for the first time.
The female mummy is of vast importance to the Mohica culture - a civilization that originated off the northern coast of Peru that pre-dates the Incan civilization - and is being shown as part of a special gallery at the summit of Huaca Cao Viejo.
Regulo Franco, the archaeologist in charge of the exhibition, said: "In Mohica iconography, as in other combat representations, only men were depicted as warriors thus challenging Senora de Cao's abilities.
"Fortunately the irrefutable evidence points out that 1,7000 years ago Senora de Cao was the ruler of the Chicama Valley."
The Peru tourism website informs visitors, some of whom may be visiting for some time with gap year travel insurance, to only drink bottled or boiled water and avoid eating food from street vendors, in addition to carrying insect repellent if visiting the highlands or jungle.
