13 September 2006 Overseas student numbers double
Students electing to study abroad, many of whom would require gap year travel insurance, have doubled in number in just under a decade, it has been reported.
A survey by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reported that the US is the most popular destinations for students electing to study away from their home country .
"Worldwide competition for highly skilled workers is strong, and international students are increasingly regarded as a source of highly skilled immigrants by some OECD countries," the report said, quoted by Reuters.
The UK was the second most popular recipient of international students, according to the report, despite recent increases in tuition fees.
Earlier in the year UK Erasmus Students Committee (UKESC) noted that 7,000 British students travelled abroad and expressed plans to raise that number to 43,000 by 2012.
This followed a scheme last year where a number of Australian and New Zealand universities offered UK students scholarships to study in those countries.
Insurers often provide specialised travel insurance for students electing to take up the offer of studying abroad or taking a gap year.
