11 April 2006 Off the African beaten track
Ethiopia could be the next key destination for the adventurous tourist looking to head off the beaten track and those with backpacker travel insurance.
According to international trade expert, Dr. Zoran Jolevski, the country has "enormous potential" for tourism, which could be tapped into by liberalising the service sector.
Ethiopia has a long and ancient history dating back 3000 years and a wide and varied natural landscape in which to make the most of your backpacker travel insurance.
From the Great Rift Valley to the savannah, there are also numerous national parks, including the Simien Mountains which are classified as a UNESCO world heritage site.
Geographically Ethiopia is very close to Dubai and the Middle East, and not too far from southern Europe for intrepid travellers and those looking to stretch their gap year travel insurance, a factor which Dr Jolevski believes could give the nation an edge over the rest of its African neighbours.
