11 August 2006  New alert could affect travellers
With many UK airports now on high alert, young people planning to travel overseas by plane should take care with their backpacker travel insurance policies, a new report suggests.

Independent financial data collection company, Defaqto, is warning that although some backpacker travel insurance policies may cover travellers for "loss, damage or injury caused by terrorism", the current airport delays may not be compensated, as there has been no actual act of terrorism.

Travellers facing long delays can claim compensation but it can be tedious to follow through such a claim and travellers are advised to check the small print on their policy.

Passengers are also now required to check every piece of luggage onto the plane apart from documents and medication, which could leave backpackers exposed to theft and loss.

Associate Director at Defaqto, Brian Brown, said: "Travellers should avoid taking expensive equipment with them if possible, or make sure they place their valuables in a secure suitcase.

"Emergencies of this type do expose the strict terms of travel insurance policies and will encourage travellers to examine their own policies to see how well they address these circumstances."

Other losses such as the cost of pre-booked accommodation and car hire may not be refundable.
