14 April 2006 Nepal expecting 1,000 backpackers for Passover
More than 1,000 backers, some armed with backpacker travel insurance, are expected to flock to Nepal for the Jewish Passover festival this year, a specialist websites predicts.
The traditional Jewish holiday celebration is called a seder and outreach organisation Chabad-Lubavitch hosts more than 1,800 public seders around the world in 472 different cities.
The annual event in Katmandu, Nepal, which is open to people with gap year travel insurance, takes place under a vast tent and tends to attract around 1,000 backpackers a year, the Associated Press reports. All Chabad seders are free, with donations accepted, and generally consist of a meal, songs and readings.
Many young Israeli travellers attend the Katmandu seder, but there are also celebrations held in Beijing, China, St Petersburg, Russia, Tijuana, Mexico, and Nairobi, Kenya.
The International Seder Database at chabad.org/passover allows travellers to search for a Passover festival by country and city.
Passover runs this year from April 12th to 20th and is one of the world's most ancient festivals, commemorating the Jews' escape from Egypt led by Moses more than three millennia ago.
