04 March 2006  Landslide threatens Australian homes
Several properties on the Gold Coast, Queensland are under threat from a landslide caused by heavy rains.

Some 30 metres of land has moved within metres of homes; a spokesman for the State Emergency Service said that the landslide appeared to be slowly moving towards a number of villas.

The storm that brought the heavy rains which triggered the landslide also brought winds measuring up to 62 miles per hour, knocking several trees over and causing damage to a number of homes in the Redcliffe and Bundaberg areas.

Power outages were suffered by some 10,000 homes as a result of the storm.

The potential for severe weather warning in popular backpacker destinations such as Australia serves to highlight the need for backpacker insurance.

Earlier this week residents and tourists in New South Wales were left stranded for several days after the Bellinger River flooded.
