20 December 2006  Hotel operators gear up for Extreme accommodation
Travellers heading to Africa interested in extreme sports, including those with backpacker travel insurance, may be interested in the establishment of a new hotel brand named Extreme Hotels.

Founded by youth-focused Istithmar Hotels and Africa hotel operator Protea Hotels have secured funding to build up the new brand.

Visitors to South Africa, such as those heading abroad with gap year travel insurance, can stay in the 130 room Extreme Hotel in Cape Town that includes a five-star climbing wall and access to extreme sports across the city.

"Our mission is to build Extreme Hotels into one of the world's leading lifestyle based hotel brands, offering something new, different and exciting in the hotel sector," Extreme Hotels reports.

It adds that the hotels will aim to combine service and quality with technology, local advice and access to extreme sports facilities and equipment.

Earlier this year, AXA expressed concerns that 18 per cent of UK holidaymakers planning on a trekking or walking break in the next 12 months did not plan to purchase travel insurance.
