11 July 2006  Gap year popularity on the increase
The popularity of gap years and the number of travellers purchasing the necessary gap year travel insurance to cover them for it, has increased by 155 per cent over the last five years, according to a new survey.

The figures, compiled by American Express travel insurance, also revealed that now over half of those taking a year or more out to go travelling are over 25-years-old.

The top five destinations for those planning a gap year were USA followed by New Zealand, South America, Australia and Europe, with India, Africa and Canada coming in sixth, seventh and eighth places respectively.

Joanne Field, marketing manger at American Express travel insurance, commented: "Not all policies are the same and it really pays to do your homework and carefully consider the level of cover in relation to your plans.

"Whilst the over 25's taking a gap break are unlikely to be on such tight budgets as younger travellers, it can still be tempting to try and skimp on insurance."

American Express also advises travellers who are planning to work abroad during their gap years to check that any labouring they do is covered by their insurance policy, while those planning to try adventurous activities should check they have the relevant sports cover on their gap year travel insurance policy.

As many as 200,000 post A-level students and graduates will be heading off on a gap year adventure this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
