05 July 2006 Forward planning 'saves funds'
Travellers, both young and old, planning gap year holidays are advised that planning is the key to a successful and affordable trip.
According to travel agent Trailfinders, careful planning of departure dates and itineraries could help save money, which could be put towards all-important gap year travel insurance.
Suggestions include when choosing a route aim to travel in one direction rather than backtracking, stick to mainstream destinations as flying into less well-known places will push up ticket prices and consider open-jaw flight options, such as flying into Bangkok and out of Singapore to save cash.
Gap year adventurers should also check out all the specialist gap year travel insurance options before they buy, as depending on where travellers go and for how long can affect the price.
Peter Gerrard, of Insuresupermarket.com, told the Observer: "Gappers should examine their policies carefully. For example if you're going to be doing a dangerous sport such as bungee jumping or scuba diving make sure you're covered."
Those heading to exotic climes should also ensure they have the correct medical cover and vaccinations before they head out.
Research from insurer Direct Line estimates that around 70,000 students are planning to put their careers on hold to travel for a year after graduation.
