22 June 2006  Financial preparation is key for gap year success
It's not just their tickets and travel insurance that gap year travellers need to consider before they head off on their big trip, according to a new report.

Managing director of moneysupermarket.com, Stuart Glendinning, recommends that as well as looking at gap year travel insurance to cover their backs whilst they are away, young travellers also need to think about looking after their finances

"Having a gap year may be great fun and a richly rewarding experience, but graduates will find it difficult to benefit from the best financial deals on the market," Mr Glendinning commented.

"However, there are certain steps which travellers can take ahead of their venture to ensure they make the most of the financial products available to them."

Staying with the same old current account may be the easiest option, but organising a savings account with a decent rate of interest can be a good way to help the travel plans along.

Extended overdraft facilities, debit and credit card overseas charges and mobile phone roaming fees are all things for travellers to bear in mind when searching out ways to save money too.

"Many of these tips may sound menial, but it’s vital they are carried out or researched ahead of the trip to ensure you are in the best financial position whilst away," Mr Glendinning added.

According to Youth Information travel site 200,000 young people take gap year per annum and Australia is the number one destination.
