29 July 2006 Brits face theft losses
Over the last five years, holidaymakers have had more than £2.7 billion worth of possessions stolen during trips abroad, although many were left unable to claim because of inadequate travel insurance policies.
According to the new report from Halifax travel insurance, over half of the items which were reported stolen, £1.5 billion worth, were not covered by travel insurance.
The figures also revealed that one in four travellers failed to report theft incidents to foreign police and more than a third did not get the required crime number in order to be able to claim on their holiday insurance.
Paul Birkhead of Halifax Travel Insurance said: "With recovery unlikely victims must ensure they obtain a crime number or report from the police without it they will be unable to claim for their loss.
"Prevention is better than cure - holidaymakers should always use a safe where there is one available and take care not to flash their cash or jewellery."
Although 72 per cent of Brits claim to be more careful with their possessions when they are abroad, it was also revealed around 1.4 million Brits have been mugged whilst abroad.
Independent market research company, Defaqto, awarded five stars to Halifax travel insurance for its product features and benefits.
