08 June 2006 Backpackers opt for old favourites
Backpacker trends are shifting from more adventurous destinations to tried and tested haunts according to a recent study.
Travel guide company Lonely Planet has reportedly seen fewer travellers choosing to use their backpacker travel insurance policies to head to exotic locations such as Peru, Chile and Brazil.
The Travellers' Pulse Survey, which took data from more than 33,000 respondents in 170 countries, instead reveals that European destinations such as Spain, Italy and Greece have become the hot spots for backpacker and gap year travellers.
Lonely Planet travel information manager, Tom Hall, said: "We have seen a resurgence in places like Australia and New Zealand which are a trip of a lifetime so many people are putting their plans back for another year to save up for the big trip.
"There has definitely been a surge in people travelling to the 'old favourites', countries such as the United States, Spain, Italy and Greece."
Australia is still the destination which Britons would most like to visit, with the United States and Thailand being the second and third favourites.
The Lonely Planet business was founded by Tony and Maureen Wheeler in the early 1970s following an overland journey from Australia across Asia to Europe, on which they based their first ever guide book.
