30 June 2006 Backpackers 'are going flash'
A new type of backpacker, who is as likely to be armed with laptops and MP3 players as they are tents and sleeping bags, has emerged.
The "flashpacker" is a type of backpacker armed with the latest high-tech accessories, for which backpacker insurance and possibly extra cover for the most expensive items could be advisable.
According to the Associated Press, the term comes from New Zealand and the term has become widespread outside the UK.
This latest variant of backpacker is not necessarily more likely to splash out on top accommodation simply because they have a few expensive items, according to one hosteller.
Luis Cutri, assistant general manager of Hostelling International in New York, remarked: "Just because you can afford a cell phone and a laptop doesn't mean you can afford a $350-a-night room in Manhattan."
Flashpacker Diaries describes the typical flashpacker as a little older than the recently-graduated post-university student, who has more money but less time.
Although the most basic of backpacker insurance policies might not cover flashpackers' laptops and iPods costing thousands of pounds, many backpacker insurance providers may be able to additional cover for more expensive items.
