04 May 2006 Australian work visa extended
Travellers heading to Australia with working holiday visas and backpacker travel insurance will now be able to work longer in one place, following changes to the Working Holiday Maker Scheme.
Backpackers, possibly with gap year travel insurance, who hold working holiday visas from any of the 19 countries covered by the agreement, will now be able to work for six months in one job, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
This is a 50 per cent increase on the previous limit of three months per job placement.
Matthew Hingerty, managing director Australian Tourism Export Council, was optimistic that this change in working rules would attract more travellers and backpackers into Australia with travel insurance.
Mr Hingerty said: "The previous restrictions meant not only were backpackers required to move on after three months, but employers were unable to retain quality workers who were generally well-educated and highly skilled."
The 12 month working holiday visa is available to people aged 18 to 30-years-old from a selection of countries worldwide including UK, Canada, Japan, Denmark and Sweden, who wish to supplement their travel in Australia with short-term employment.
