01 September 2006 African passenger growth tops list
Figures released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have shown a rise in worldwide passenger traffic, with the destination breakdown revealing high growth rates for destinations popular with those buying backpacker travel insurance.
There was an overall 5.2 per cent growth in passenger traffic in July compared with the same month last year, with a 13.1 per cent rise for Africa.
Giovanni Bisignani, director general and chief executive officer of IATA, said: "The load factors are amazing. For the first seven months of the year passenger demand grew by 6.4 per cent while capacity expanded by 4.7 per cent pushing the average load factor to 76 per cent.
"The result is a strong revenue environment that is helping to combat the increasing price of fuel."
Events such as the football World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2010 in conjunction with events such as Live 8 have helped publicise the African continent as a destination for backpackers and those needing gap year travel insurance.
