17 May 2006  African overland adventure beckons backpackers
For backpackers with a taste for adventure and suitable backpacker travel insurance, the affordable and exciting experience of overlanding is proving more and more popular.

From gorilla watching in Uganda and cycling in Hells Gate national park in Kenya, to white water rafting in Victoria national park, overlanding has something for every traveller with adequate backpacker travel insurance.

The trips are for groups of about twelve with the ages of participants, many of whom will have travel insurance, usually ranging from 18 to 50-years-old.

The overland expeditions usually start at about £200 and can last anywhere from four days to six months, with participants, whether covered by travel insurance or not, required to carry their own food and cooking supplies.

Though the trips are usually well supervised, with the guides keeping danger to a minimum, they are still billed as adventure trips and wise backpackers will take the necessary precautions, like taking out travel insurance.

Travel insurance in usually a requirement rather than an option on most overlanding trips, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises backpackers to get travel insurance for wherever they go, as medical costs should anything untoward occur could be astronomic.
