15 June 2006 A change of scene for Thailand
Travellers heading for Thailand but looking to avoid the backpacker trail, while still making the most of their holiday insurance, should make their way to the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.
Although well-known for their long-standing connection with the backpacker scene and for being popular among those with gap year travel insurance, according to Aussie travel site Escape.com the two islands are now emerging spa centres.
With "plenty to suit every kind of budget" backpackers looking for some pampering and self-improvement could head to the Health Oasis Resort on Koh Samui.
Offering morning yoga classes and massages alongside the speciality fasting and colonics, visitors are also welcome to simply go and enjoy the home-cooked Thai food.
For backpackers looking for a little bit more glamour in their get-away, The Sanctuary, Koh Phangan is where Jack Osbourne underwent his celebrity transformation from troubled teen to man-about-town.
According to travel guide site Lonely Planet, Thailand attracts more visitors than any other country in south east Asia, with the best season to visit being from November to February.
